Summary

In the heart-stopping finale to the Crown of Feathers trilogy, which #1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake calls “absolutely unforgettable,” Veronyka must face her most devastating enemy yet: her own sister。

I had a sister, once…

Veronyka is no longer an orphaned stable boy or a nameless Phoenix Rider apprentice: she is the daughter of Pheronia Ashfire, the last queen of the Golden Empire…and the niece of Avalkyra Ashfire, the resurrected rebel queen who tore the empire apart。

We shone brightly, burned fiercely。

Now that the secret is out, everyone at the Eyrie treats Veronyka differently, and with Tristan still a hostage of the scheming Lord Rolan—and Sev with him as a spy—Veronyka feels very much alone。 Except for her beloved phoenix, Xephyra, of course, and her new friend, Kade, who has his own reasons for wanting to save Tristan。

Was it always going to come down to this? Sister against sister? Darkness against light?

Veronyka is determined to do whatever it takes to get Tristan back, even if that means revealing her identity to the world and inheriting a throne she’s not sure she wants。 But when she discovers that Avalkyra has bonded with a strix—a legendary creature of darkness that feeds off the life force of others—Veronyka realizes she has more to deal with than an encroaching war with the empire。 Val is willing to destroy everything to get her revenge on a world that rejected her, and if Veronyka wants to bring peace to the empire and Pyra alike, she must face down her sister once and for all。

The world began with Ashfire queens…perhaps they will also be its destruction。

3。75Finishing is series of books is always satisfying thing, but also a sorrowful thing cause you know your time with the characters is over。 NPP has a way of making you like and character and then hate a character or vise versa, and it's safe to say that my least favorite character in the first book became my favorite in the second。 There was some romance however that I didn't think was necessary in this book and while the final chunk was brilliant, I couldn't help feel it was lacking somewhat, 3。75Finishing is series of books is always satisfying thing, but also a sorrowful thing cause you know your time with the characters is over。 NPP has a way of making you like and character and then hate a character or vise versa, and it's safe to say that my least favorite character in the first book became my favorite in the second。 There was some romance however that I didn't think was necessary in this book and while the final chunk was brilliant, I couldn't help feel it was lacking somewhat, that it all ended a little to simply and easily。 I liked it more than the second, and it was close to the first apart from that I felt that there was still so much exposition that wasn't always needed。 。。。more

4。75 stars! I thought this was a great ending to the trilogy。 I’ve been invested in these since page one and I feel they bring great action mixed with sweet and tender moments between characters。 The magic is both complex and easy to understand and I love that the phoenixes have the personalities of giant puppies

This book was surprising and not all at the same time。 I found myself wonderfully frustrated as I was bounced between the different character POVs as we followed everyone to the end of this spectacular story and struggle, mostly because I kept wanting to know what was going on with whatever characters I had just been following。 I was quickly swept up in the part of the story I was tossed into and fully immersed until in came time to switch again。 This is a wonderful story of love and loss and fa This book was surprising and not all at the same time。 I found myself wonderfully frustrated as I was bounced between the different character POVs as we followed everyone to the end of this spectacular story and struggle, mostly because I kept wanting to know what was going on with whatever characters I had just been following。 I was quickly swept up in the part of the story I was tossed into and fully immersed until in came time to switch again。 This is a wonderful story of love and loss and family and sacrifice。 。。。more

Solid and satisfying conclusion to the trilogy。 I can't go too in depth with regards to spoilers but the examination of the themes of light and darkness, forgiveness, and love were resonant and well done。 Solid and satisfying conclusion to the trilogy。 I can't go too in depth with regards to spoilers but the examination of the themes of light and darkness, forgiveness, and love were resonant and well done。 。。。more

I don't think there will ever be words to properly describe how much this book means to me and how good it was。 I spent almost a month reading this book because I was so scared for this series to be over and literally as I sit here writing this review I'm starting to cry。 If you do nothing else in your reading journey, please make sure the Crown of Feathers series is on it。oookKAY now to actually review this book。 Wings of Shadow is the third and final book of the Crown of Feathers trilogy。 Up t I don't think there will ever be words to properly describe how much this book means to me and how good it was。 I spent almost a month reading this book because I was so scared for this series to be over and literally as I sit here writing this review I'm starting to cry。 If you do nothing else in your reading journey, please make sure the Crown of Feathers series is on it。oookKAY now to actually review this book。 Wings of Shadow is the third and final book of the Crown of Feathers trilogy。 Up to this point we have followed multiple perspectives of an empire torn apart。 We have Veronyka our main main character who has aspired to be a phoenix rider all her life。 Val, her sister and (view spoiler)[ secretly a resurrected queen (hide spoiler)] Tristan, the phoenix rider commander's son and Veronyka's love interest。 Sev, an animage soldier turned spy; and many many many wonderful more characters。 As you can expect from a final book we are following the final battle between our two sisters and where it will leave this empire。First of all we need to talk about this WORLD。 Nicki has done a phenomenal job of building this world including history that just builds upon what is currently happening。 I annotated this book and tabbed so many "interesting history" tidbits。 One of my particular favorites was learning about the (view spoiler)[ apex/benex bond between Nefyra/Callysta and how one pretty much TELEPORTED through shadowmage ability when the other fell off a phoenix in battle。 That was so INTENSE。 (hide spoiler)] Also the different settings and ways the phoenixes interacted in those settings。THE CHARACTERS THE CHARACTER THE CHARACTERS。 I am 100% a character driven story lover and this story does NOT disappoint in that department。 I feel like I could write an essay about each of these characters and the impact and emotional depth they provide to the story even down to the side characters。 Everyone matters in this world which is why every single death that did happen hurt。 Even though I could touch on every single one of these characters my favorite is of course Veronyka。 Seeing her come into her confidence was so heartwarming and her leadership skills are so genuine。 I love everything about her。 (view spoiler)[ Also the scene where she meets her dad and grandma may be one of my absolute favorite scenes in the entire book。 (hide spoiler)]The PLOOOTTTT。 I swear, I'm a character driven story line person as I already said but this book is ALSO plot driven?! How does Nicki even do it?! There are so many twists and turns and elements I did not expect。 I am very very focused and paid attention to details and there were moments I was able to guess things but for the most part I was shocked at every turn。 This story gripped me from the start and held on tight to my heart until the very last page。 Thank you Nicki for writing this incredible world that I could watch grow and build a little phoenix riders patrol around myself。 I will forever be grateful for this story and what it gave me。Okay, I'm gonna go cry some more now - bye! 。。。more

I was going to give this four stars because it was a bit slow at times, but the ending was A。M。A。Z。I。N。G! It’s so rare that books end without leaving an empty feeling。 And although I’ll really miss the series I’m happy with where the characters are and everything is resolved。 This series is CRIMINALLY underrated!

The book was great! I was ready for more Intimacy in this third book but it was not there。

An absolutely beautiful ending to the trilogy, I can’t wait to reread this series and get back in with all these wonderful characters。

I rate this book 4。4/10 by Bookroast's CAWPILE system (see details below)。 This review might contain minor spoilers。That was a painful read。 The writing style started to bug me in the second book and it annoyed me even more in this one。 There was simply no need to have so many different POVs, especially since they often acted as spoilers and nipped any intrigue in the bud。 I can't believe we still got like 5 chapters or so of various POVs AFTER the freaking plot end。 Each character had long mono I rate this book 4。4/10 by Bookroast's CAWPILE system (see details below)。 This review might contain minor spoilers。That was a painful read。 The writing style started to bug me in the second book and it annoyed me even more in this one。 There was simply no need to have so many different POVs, especially since they often acted as spoilers and nipped any intrigue in the bud。 I can't believe we still got like 5 chapters or so of various POVs AFTER the freaking plot end。 Each character had long monologues in their heads that interrupted the flow of the action/dialogues and were also unnecessary since most of them were about things we already knew。 We also got two characters describing the SAME PLACE in the exact same way only because one arrived after the other - the readers don't need to be told what a place looks like twice just because of the damn different POVs, especially since both characters perceived the place very similarly。The ending was also very disappointing to me。 We have the climax of a buildup that spans three books and culminates (as expected) in war, but the losses are so insignificant。 Everything was written in a way to cause a little bit of impact, but not much - there is even a character whose THROAT gets SLICED and still they don't die。 What?! There's magic lost but then regained, phoenixes who can conveniently choose to be reborn or not whether it suits the plot or not, and a very convenient way to deal with the villain。 It feels more like a child's book than YA, and there's no excuse for it - even the battle of Hogwarts saw significant losses that grieved the characters and the readers, while here we get almost a Disney-like happy ending。This series started out all right, the premise is interesting and the world is well built - unfortunately, finishing it felt very much like a chore。Characters 6/10Atmosphere 7/10Writing style 3/10Plot 5/10Intrigue 3/10Logic 4/10Enjoyment 3/10Edit: The cover art is absolutely stunning, though。 I wish the book lived up to it。 Still, looking at the other reviews, mine seems to be a very unpopular opinion lol 。。。more

…。。 Wow。 What。 A。 CONCLUSION! I don’t even know what to say。 From the beginning it just built up to the inevitable battle that you knew was going to happen。。 but the last 150-200 pages。。 I laughed out loud, I yelled, I cheered, I gasped out loud, I was angry, I was sad, I cried tears of sadness and then tears of joy。 SO。 MANY。 EMOTIONS。 Nicki Pau Preto is such a talented author and I will buy anything this woman writes。 Just。。 wow。

Fantastic conclusion to the series。 Filled with intense and heartrending moments, as well as humor and joy and friendship。 All the characters evolved really well since the initial book and the storyline progressed and ended, but with room for the world to grow。

Wow。 I am just as blown away by this book as I was by each of the books in the trilogy。 This books are so fantastically written。 There is never a dull moment。 Something is always happening, whether it be action/fight scenes, romance scenes, or political scenes, there isn’t a boring moment in it。 I love these characters with my whole heart, and I am not ashamed to say I cried quite loudly at the ending。 I am so happy to finally read these character’s happy endings, and I know I will be returning Wow。 I am just as blown away by this book as I was by each of the books in the trilogy。 This books are so fantastically written。 There is never a dull moment。 Something is always happening, whether it be action/fight scenes, romance scenes, or political scenes, there isn’t a boring moment in it。 I love these characters with my whole heart, and I am not ashamed to say I cried quite loudly at the ending。 I am so happy to finally read these character’s happy endings, and I know I will be returning for a binge of this series later this year。 In conclusion, if you haven’t read these yet, do it。 Now。 They are so freaking good。 。。。more

Extremely well written and thought out world。 I love these books and it was a good conclusion to the trilogy。 I loved how Pau Preto ended the series and she writes beautifully! I would honestly recommend this series to everyone simply because of the writing。 I haven’t read a YA fantasy book this well written in a while。
